FRANKLIN, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team finished its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series at Franklin College on Saturday as the Quakers fell 8-3 and 4-3.
In the opener, Earlham grabbed a 3-0 advantage in the third inning. With two outs,
Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) reached base on an error.
Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) singled to right and Schroeder went to third base.
Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant) gave the Quakers the lead with a run-scoring single. Williams went to third and Morrical eventually made it to second on the throw to the infield.
Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) then struck out, but he made it to first base on the wild pitch. Williams and Morrical both scored on the play.
In the bottom of the third, Franklin (11-3, 3-0) scored three times off Earlham starting pitcher
Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN, Snider), who surrendered his first earned runs of the season in 36 innings.
One frame later, the Grizzlies added four more runs to go on top 7-3.
Painter (3-3) left the mound with one out in the fifth, after giving up seven runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout.
T. J. Plummer (Aurora, IN, South Dearborn) finished the contest allowing a run on a hit with three walks and one strikeout.
Morrical led the Quakers with two hits. He also tied a school record for career runs scored with the tally in the third. He has 10 runs this season, which gives him 99 in his career to equal the mark set by
Jake Carr (2007-10).
Game Two
Like the first game, Earlham had a 3-0 lead in the second contest.
Schroeder led off the third with a single and Williams reached on catcher's interference. As Morrical attempted to get a sacrifice bunt down he made it to first on an error by Franklin that allowed Schroeder to score.
With Williams at third, Morrical stole second and Williams came home on another error by the Grizzlies.
Schroeder's RBI single in the fourth gave the Quakers their three-run advantage.
Franklin scored its first run of the contest in the seventh against Earlham starter
Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville).
Earlham had a trio of pitchers on the mound in the eighth as Franklin scored three times to take the lead. Broach, who was credited with seven innings, gave up three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern), who came in for Broach, gave up the winning run on a pair of hits as he suffered the loss to go to 0-2.
Jake Elmlinger (Hamilton, OH, Fairfield) finished the eighth and walked a batter.
Schroeder led Earlham with two hits.
The Quakers (6-8, 0-3) entertain Cincinnati Christian University on Wednesday. The first contest of the non-conference doubleheader on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium begins at 5 p.m.
