DEFIANCE, Ohio — Ted Williams had three hits including a homer on Sunday to lead the Earlham College baseball team to a 7-2 win over Defiance College.
With the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory, Earlham completed a three-game series sweep of the Yellow Jackets (5-20, 1-9). It was the first time Earlham swept a three-game series in conference play since winning at Oberlin College in 1993 in North Coast Athletic Conference action.
"It was definitely nice to sweep after losing to Bluffton last week," Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits said. "We didn't have everything go our way but we were resilient and found a way to get things done."
The Quakers broke up the scoreless contest in the third inning with a pair of runs. There was one out when
Chance Von Holle (Morrow, OH, Little Miami) started the rally with a walk.
Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant)doubled home VonHolle.
Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) followed with a single to score Morrical to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, Williams gave the Quakers a 5-0 advantage with one swing.
Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) walked with two outs. He moved to second on a passed ball before Morrical walked. Williams then blasted a three-run homer to left field.
"Ted saw a couple of fastballs he was able to do something with," Sakosits said. "Their pitcher, Darin Waterman, came at us. Early in the game he had success, but our hitters had to make the adjustment to get ready for his fastball. Ted was able to get something on the inner half of the plate and drive it."
The Yellow Jackets scored an unearned run in the fifth off of Earlham starting pitcher
Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville).
Earlham added two more runs in the seventh. The first was on an error by Defiance and the second was on a RBI single by
Chris Tillery (Carmel, IN, Carmel) that scored Williams, who had doubled.
Defiance scored the final run of the contest in the ninth off Broach.
Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb) finished the ninth on the mound for the Quakers and recorded two strikeouts.
Broach (3-2) officially worked eight innings as he gave up two runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Sakosits was pleased with the pitching staff for the weekend. "Our guys set the tone by going after hitters," he said.
In the three games, Earlham had an ERA of 1.44 and through 25 innings the Quakers gave up six runs on 20 hits with seven walks and 24 strikeouts.
Earlham (11-12, 4-6) entertains Bluffton University Tuesday night on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium. The nine-inning HCAC contest begins at 6 p.m.
