EC Begins HCAC Series at Manchester

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NO. MANCHESTER, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team fell twice to Manchester College on Saturday as the Quakers faced the top squad in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Manchester won the opener 14-5 and the second game 19-10.

In the opener, the Quakers got a pair of unearned runs in the first inning to grab an early lead. Ross Yoho (Plainfield, IN, Plainfield) highlighted the frame with a run-scoring single.

Manchester responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead, but Earlham came back with a run in the top of the third to tie the contest. Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) scored on a passed ball to make it 3-3.

Unfortunately for the Quakers, Manchester scored twice in its half of the third inning and added three more runs in the fourth to build an 8-3 advantage.

Earlham got closer in the sixth when Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) brought home two runs with a double to make it 6-5.

The Spartans picked up six runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.

Yoho, Williams, McCray, Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster), Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie), Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb) and Taylor Gibson (Cumberland, IN, Mt. Vernon) had hits for the Quakers.

Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN, Snider) went six innings on the mound for the Quakers giving up eight runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts. Only five of the runs were earned for Painter (4-4).

The Quakers started the second contest with a run in the first inning. Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant) walked with one out and Williams followed with a single and an error by Manchester permitted Morrical to score.

Manchester scored two times in the first and added five runs in the second against Earlham starting pitcher Caleb Brown (Newark, OH, Granville).  

With four runs in the fifth inning, Earlham worked its way back into the contest. Zach Stanforth (Clarksville, OH, Clinton Massie) led off the inning with a single. Chance Von Holle (Morrow, OH, Little Miami) reached base on a error. Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) moved both runners up one base with a sacrifice bunt.

Morrical's two-run single closed the cap to 7-3. Morrical then stole second and advanced to third on an error by Manchester's catcher. He scored on a balk. After another Manchester error and a hit by pitch, Chris Miller (Topeka, IN, Westview) knocked in the final run of the inning with a single and it was 7-5.

Manchester added another run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Quakers bounced back with a tally in the sixth on a RBI single by Dye that made it 8-6.

The Spartans scored 11 runs in the sixth to take a 19-6 lead. Earlham scored three unearned runs in the seventh and added its last score in the ninth on a RBI single by Williams.

Dye led the Quakers with three hits, while Schroeder, Williams and Chris Miller had two each. Brown (1-1) took the loss for Earlham.

The Quakers (11-15, 4-9) play at Manchester (20-8, 11-2) on Sunday. The 9-inning series finale gets underway at noon.
