EC Beats Transylvania to Snap 68-Match HCAC Winning Streak

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The streak is over.

The Earlham College men's tennis team picked up a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victories on Sunday at Transylvania University with the last win making history.

After Earlham defeated Defiance College 9-0, the Quakers snapped Transylvania's 68-match HCAC winning streak in an 8-1 decision over the Pioneers, who lost for the first time in league play since 2002.

"It was nice to break the streak, but the HCAC Tourney is what is really important," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "We need to keep playing well. Our level of play was the highest we've had."

The Quakers are now 12-3 overall with a 4-1 record in the conference and in second place behind the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (7-5, 6-1). Transylvania, the winners of the last eight HCAC titles, is 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

"Hank had a huge win by beating the two-time HCAC Player of the Year," Van Zee said.

At No. 2, Gavrilov won 6-2, 6-2 over Henderson, while Maisey beat Pat Corbett 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3.
