NO. MANCHESTER, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team completed its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series with Manchester College on Sunday as the Quakers dropped an 18-10 decision to the Spartans.
There was plenty of offense as the Quakers had 17 hits and Manchester had 18.
The Quakers grabbed an early 3-0 with a pair of homers in the first inning.
Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) was hit by a pitch to begin the frame.
Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant) followed with a homer to put Earlham ahead 2-0. It was the 12th of his career, which puts him in a tie for second on Earlham's all-time list (since 1974) with Chas Meade (1974-77). Bobby Ebright (1996-97) leads the way with 17.
Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) then homered for the third time this season and the Quakers had a three-run advantage.
It didn't last long as the HCAC leading Spartans (21-8, 12-2) scored once in the first and twice in the second to tie the contest at 3-3.
In the top of the third, Earlham took a 5-3 lead with a RBI single by
Zach Stanforth (Clarksville, OH, Clinton Massie) and an unearned run.
One inning later,
Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster) made it 6-3 with a run-scoring single.
Manchester responded with three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to go on top 9-6.
Williams smacked a two-run homer in the sixth to close the gap to 9-8 before the Spartans added three runs in the sixth, one more in the seventh and five in the eighth to take control of the contest.
A run-scoring single by Morrical and a RBI double by Dye in the ninth ended the afternoon.
Morrical, Williams, Dye and Stanforth led the Quakers with three hits each. Schroeder and
Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) added two hits apiece.
Starting pitcher
Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville) took the loss for the Quakers. Broach (3-3) went five innings and gave up nine runs on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) and
Jake Elmlinger (Hamilton, OH, Fairfield) also pitched for the Quakers.
Earlham (11-16, 4-10) entertains the College of Mount St. Joseph on Tuesday. The 9-inning contest on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium starts at 6 p.m.
