EC Plays Twinbill with Rose-Hulman at McBride

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team dropped a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers won the opener 3-1 on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium and followed with an 11-6 victory in the second contest.

In the first game, Rose Hulman worked its way to a 3-0 advantage against Earlham pitcher Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville) before the Quakers batted in the bottom of the third inning.

Earlham got on the scoreboard in the third to make it 3-1. Andy McCoppin (Middletown, OH, Madison) started the frame with a double and he moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Miller (Topeka, IN, Westview).

Taylor Gibson (Cumberland, IN, Mt. Vernon) knocked in the run with groundout to score McCoppin. That was all of the scoring by either team the rest of the way.

Broach (2-2) tossed a complete game as he gave up three runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts in seven innings.

In addition to McCoppin, the Quakers got a double from Logan Kunkel (Oxford, OH, Talawanda) and singles from Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster) and Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North).

Earlham's offense picked up early in the second game. After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Quakers responded with a pair of runs to take the lead.

Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) led off the bottom of the first with a single. One out later with Williams at the plate, Schroeder stole second.

Williams followed with a double that scored Schroeder to tie the contest. Dye doubled to score Williams to make it 2-1.

The Engineers (14-5, 4-1) scored twice in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but again the Quakers had a response with a pair of runs.

Like the first inning, Schroeder started the rally with a single. Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant) walked and Williams had a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a base.

Dye had a RBI ground out to make it 3-3 as Schroeder scored. With Morrical moving to third on the play, Kunkel walked to set up a run-scoring single by Ross Yoho (Plainfield, IN, Plainfield) to make it 4-3.

Earlham added a run in the fourth with a two-out rally. Schroeder walked and Morrical singled to put runners at first and second. Williams singled to knock in Schroeder to make it 5-3.

Rose-Hulman made it 5-4 with a run in the fifth.

In the sixth, Earlham went up 6-4. Morrical was hit by a pitch and then proceeded to steal second and third. He eventually scored on a single by Williams.

The lead wouldn't last as Rose-Hulman tied the game with two runs in the seventh. The Engineers then took control with four runs in the eighth and another in the ninth.

Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN, Snider) started on the mound for the Quakers and went six innings allowing six runs on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) worked an inning and he was releived by T. J. Plummer (Aurora, IN, South Dearborn) who took the loss to go to 0-2. Plummer got one batter out, while surrendering three runs on a hit with two walks. Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb) finished the contest as he gave up two runs on three hits.

Schroeder led the Quakers with three hits with Williams, Dye and Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) finishing with two hits each.

Earlham (7-11, 0-5) finish the HCAC series with Rose-Hulman on Sunday with a 9-inning single game beginning at noon at McBride.
