Painter Tames Mount St. Joseph

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — Adam Painter struck out 13 batters on Wednesday to lead the Earlham College baseball team to a 5-2 victory over the College of Mount St. Joseph.

"This is a very good win for us," Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits said of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium.

"Mount St. Joseph is a very good team," Sakosits added. "They are perennially at the top of the conference and we have to let teams know that it is going to be tough to come here and win."

Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN, Snider) tossed his sixth complete game of the season to put his record at 5-4. He gave up seven hits and two runs with a walk in nine innings. Both runs for the Lions (14-16, 7-8) came in the ninth.

"We need our pitcher to come out and be dominant on the mound," Sakosits said. "We have to throw strikes, make the rountine plays and we did that in this game."

Offensively, the Quakers grabbed an early lead against Mount St. Joseph starter Collin Shaw (2-3), who went six innings and gave up two runs in the second, while striking out 11.

Zach Stanforth (Clarksville, OH, Clinton Massie) led off the frame with a single. He later stole second and scored on a double by Ross Yoho (Plainfield, IN, Plainfield). Earlham's second run came when Yoho moved to third on a wild pitch a scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Miller (Topeka, IN, Westview).

"Ross has the ability to do that every game and he can be very successful," Sakosits said.

Yoho was at it again in the eighth inning. After the Quakers scored an unearned run, Yoho doubled to drive in a pair of runs to give the Quakers a 5-0 advantage.

Stanforth led Quakers with three hits.

Record Watch

With a strikeout in the third inning, Painter established a new single-season record in that category and he now has 70. He extended his school records for career victories (17) and strikeouts (195). The 13 strikeouts equal his career-high that he had earlier this season in a win at Johnson Bible College. It is the third time he has reached double digits in strikeouts. As a sophomore, Painter had 10 strikeouts against Wabash College in 2009.

Andrew Morrical also set an Earlham career record on Wednesday with a double that begin the three-run rally in the eighth. It was the 41st of his career and he passed Jake Carr (2007-10), who has 40. Morrical scored in the eighth and it was the 116th run of his career, which is at the top of the list in school history.

Earlham (12-16, 5-10) entertains Hanover College on Saturday. The first game of the HCAC doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m.
