RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team opened its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series against Hanover College on Saturday with a pair of losses to the Panthers.
Hanover won the first contest 9-3 on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium and then needed 10 innings to take the second affair 10-6.
In the opener, the Panthers (13-17, 8-8) led 8-0 after four innings before the Quakers were able to get on the scoreboard in the sixth against Mitch Hunnicut (6-1).
Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) led off the inning with a single. One out later,
Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) tripled to center to score Schroeder. Williams scored on a ground out by
Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster).
Hanover added a run in the top of seventh.
Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) hit a solo home run to right in the bottom of the seventh for the Quakers.
Caleb Brown (Newark, OH, Granville) took the loss for the Quakers. Brown (1-2) worked two innings giving up four runs one three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Jake Elmlinger (Hamilton, OH, Fairfield) and
Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) also were on the mound for the Quakers.
Game Two
Earlham battled back in the second contest only to have Hanover score four times in the 10th inning to put the game away.
Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth,
Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant) blasted a two-run homer to tie the game. The long ball also tied Morrical with Jake Carr (2007-10) at the top of the Earlham all-time RBI list (since 1974) with 102. The homer was the 13th of Morrical's career, which is now second all-time for the Quakers behind Bobby Ebright (1996-97), who has 17.
Unfortunately for the Quakers, they were not able to keep the momentum in their direction as the Panthers touched up
Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) for the decisive runs in the next frame. Lee (2-4), who had held Hanover scoreless in the ninth, gave up four runs on five hits with a strikeout.
Early lead for EC
The Quakers began the second game with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Schroeder,
Chris Tillery (Carmel, IN, Carmel) and Williams started the inning with singles to load the bases. After
Zach Stanforth (Clarksville, OH, Clinton Massie) struck out, Morrical hit a sacrifice fly to score Schroeder as he recorded the 100th RBI of his career.
The Panthers scored twice in the third before the Quakers rallied to tie the game in the fourth when Schroeder walked with the bases loaded.
With three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth Hanover went in front 6-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Earlham started its comeback with a pair of runs.
Chance Von Holle (Morrow, OH, Little Miami) was hit by a pitch with two outs. Schroeder then walked.
Tillery singled to knock in VonHolle and Williams doubled to drive in Schroeder to make it 6-4 to set the stage for Morrical's home run that would send the game into extra innings.
Schroeder, Tillery and Williams led the Quakers with two hits each. Earlham starter
Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville) went eight innnings and gave up six runs on 10 hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Earlham (12-18, 5-12) and Hanover finish the HCAC series on Monday at McBride with a 9-inning single game at 6 p.m.
