CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Earlham College baseball team waited almost three hours through a rain delay on Thursday night before starting the final contest in a two-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series against the College of Mount St. Joseph.
Mount St. Joseph won 5-1 at Marge Schott Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati to earn a split in the two-game series after the Quakers posted a 5-2 victory last week in Richmond.
The Quakers scored in the first inning to grab an early advantage.
Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant) singled and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond).
Morrical advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a ground out by
Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North).
The Lions (17-17, 10-9) tied the contest with a run in the bottom of the first before adding another in the third, which was unearned. Mount St. Joseph scored three times in the fourth with what turned out to be the final runs of the night.
Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) started on the mound for the Quakers and worked 3 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts to fall to 0-2 on the season.
Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville) went 2 1/3 scoreless innings and surrendered three hits with two strikeouts.
Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN, Snider) tossed the final two frames without allowing a run on one hit with three strikeouts.
Earlham (12-19, 5-13) entertains Transylvania University this weekend in a three-game HCAC series that has been changed from its originally scheduled format.
Saturday, the Quakers celebrate Senior Day on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium as Morrical and Painter will be recognized. The first game of the doubleheader now starts at 3 p.m. The series finale is a 9-inning affair on Sunday at noon. Due to a poor weather forcast for the Richmond area the weekend schedule is subject to change.
