EC Falls to Pioneers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team fell twice Saturday to Transylvania University on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium.

The Pioneers won the first game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader 8-5 before taking the nightcap 13-3.

After Transylvania scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead in the opener, the Quakers tied the game when
Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant) knocked in a run on a fielder's choice.

By the sixth inning, Transylvania built a 7-1 advantage. The Quakers were able to answer to close the gap with one swing.

Chris Miller (Topeka, IN, Westview) hit a grand slam homer to make it 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth. Transylvania added the final run of the contest in the top of the seventh.

Miller led the Quakers with three hits, while Morrical,
Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) and Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) finished with two hits each.

Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville) started on the mound for the Quakers and left with two outs in the sixth inning. Broach (3-4) gave up seven runs on 11 hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Caleb Brown (Newark, OH, Granville) finished the game as he surrendered a run on two hits with a strikeout.

Game 2

The second contest was tight early as the Pioneers put a run on the board in the first. In the fourth inning Transylvania scored four times and added five more runs in the fifth to lead 10-0.

Earlham scored its first run of the game in the fifth on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by
Taylor Gibson (Cumberland, IN, Mt. Vernon).

Transylvania scored three times in the seventh to go on top 13-1.

The Quakers had two runs in the bottom of the ninth to finish the game. Schroeder knocked in the first run with a double and the second came on a bases loaded walk to
Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North).

Schroeder, Morrical, Chris Miller and
Chris Tillery (Carmel, IN, Carmel) had hits for the Quakers.

Earlham starting pitcher
Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN, Snider) worked four innings. Painter (5-5) gave up seven runs on nine hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb) tossed the next three frames and gave up six runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. T.J. Plummer went the final two innings allowing just one baserunner.

The Quakers (12-21, 5-15) wrap up the HCAC series with Transylvania (21-7, 12-4) on Sunday. The 9-inning single game gets underway at noon.

Senior Day

Morrical and Painter were honored between games for their four years in the Earlham baseball program.

Morrical has earned all-conference and team awards in his career. He was All-North Coast Athletic Conference Second Team in 2009 and honorable mention in 2008. As a first-year at Earlham, he was named the Newcomer of the Year for the Quakers. In 2009, he was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year for Earlham.

In the Earlham record book, Morrical is No. 1 in at bats, doubles, runs scored and RBI. He is second in hits, home runs and stolen bases.

Painter is also highly decorated for his performance. He was All-NCAC Second Team in 2009 and honorable mention in 2010. He was Earlham's Pitcher of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Painter is Earlham's all-time leader in victories, strikeouts and innings pitched. He also set the single-season strikeout mark this year. Earlier this month, Painter received the George Van Dyke Outstanding Senior Athlete Award.
