Quakers Explode for 32 runs

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — There was a lot of action at home plate on Sunday as the Earlham College baseball team routed Transylvania University 32-6 on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium.

Transylvania (21-8, 12-5) began the day at the top of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, but an eight-run fifth inning put the Quakers in front to stay in the wrap up for the three-game series. The Pioneers led 6-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Quakers rallied to build a 13-6 advantage.

Despite the seven-run lead, Earlham wasn't done touching the plate on the rainy afternoon as the Quakers scored 15 times in the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Quakers added four more runs in the eighth. The 26-run victory margin is the largest for the Quakers since they beat Crown College 30-3 in 2009.

"The conditions were sub-par, but had to get the conference game in and we want to see our young kids play as much as possible," Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits said. "We had some guys get some at bats with some runners on base and they took advantage of that and gained some confidence."

The Quakers had 17 hits against nine different Transylvania pitchers with Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) and Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) leading the way with four each.

"We swung the bats very well this weekend," Sakosits said. "Hopefully, that will springboard us to the future."

Williams was 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs as he knocked in nine runs. Schroeder had three his hits in the seventh inning.

Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster), Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant) and Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) had two hits apiece. Dye had three RBI. Morrical, Earlham's all-time RBI leader, had two on Sunday to give him 105 in his career. Hayes hit a grand slam homer and had six RBI on the day.

Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay), Chris Miller (Topeka, IN, Westview) and Andy McCoppin (Middletown, OH) had one hit each.

Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) started on the mound for the Quakers and he left with two outs in the third inning.

Caleb Brown (Newark, OH, Granville) worked through the eighth inning to even his record at 2-2 as he held the Pioneers scoreless on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Jake Elmlinger (Hamilton, OH, Fairfield) tossed the ninth with a walk and one strikeout.

Earlham (13-21, 6-15) finishes its season later this week as the Quakers entertain HCAC foe Anderson University in a three-game series. On Thursday, the teams play a 9-inning single game at 5 p.m. The squads finish the series with a doubleheader on Friday at noon.
