EC Ends Season with HCAC Loss to Ravens

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team said good-bye a pair of seniors on Friday as the Quakers finished the season against Anderson University with a 14-11 loss on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium.

Outfielder Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN, Madison-Grant) and pitcher Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN, Snider) were in uniform for the final time for the Quakers.

"They are two great ambassadors for the program," Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits said. "They beleived in what the future of Earlham baseball is going to be. I wish I could keep them until they wanted to stop playing."

Morrical had three hits for the Quakers on Friday, while Painter did not play after pitching on Thursday.

The Quakers (13-24, 6-18) fell behind early after giving up four runs in the first inning and two in the third.

In the fourth inning, Earlham cut the deficit in half. After Morrical singled with one out, Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) hit his team-high sixth home run of the season to make it 6-2.

Earlham added another run on a single by Chance VonHolle (Morrow, OH, Little Miami).

Unfortunately for the Quakers, Anderson responded with five runs in the fifth to take an 11-3 lead.

A sacrifice fly by VonHolle in the sixth made it 11-4. The Ravens scored in the seventh to make it 12-4.

The Quakers nearly came all the way back in the bottom of the seventh as they scored seven times to make it 12-11.

"I told them no matter what hole we dug, we didn't give up," Sakosits said. "You want them to put themselves in better situations early, but late in the game they are not going to quit."

Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) singled to start the frame and Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) walked. Morrical then reached on a error that allowed Schroeder to score.

Hayes was hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases for Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster), who knocked in a run with a single to make it 12-6. VonHolle and Ross Yoho (Plainfield, IN, Plainfield) each walked, which forced in runs to make it 12-8.

Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) had a two-run double before Schroeder singled to drive in the final tally of the inning.

Anderson scored once in the eighth and ninth for the final runs of the contest.

Jake Elmlinger (Hamilton, OH, Fairfield) started on the mound for the Quakers. Elmlinger (0-2) went three innings and gave up six runs on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout. Caleb Brown (Newark, OH, Granville), Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) and T. J. Plummer (Aurora, IN, South Dearborn) finished on the mound.

In addition to Morrical, Hayes had three hits with Schroeder, Dye and VonHolle adding two each.

The Record Book

Morrical and Painter led the way in the record department this season, but there were a few other players who found their way into Earlham's history book.

Morrical leaves the program on top of the all-time career list in at-bats (525), doubles (43), runs scored (127), RBI (105) and stolen bases (49). Morrical is second in hits (177) and home runs (13).

Painter leads the way in all-time career victories (17), strikeouts (207) and innings pitched (266.1).

On the single season list, Morrical is first in runs scored (38), second in at-bats (140) and fourth in stolen bases (18).

Painter now holds the single-season strikeout mark (82) and innings pitched (82.1). His five victories is second on the list.

The six home runs by Hayes is the second best total in school history just one behind Bobby Ebright (1996).

Williams is now third on the RBI list after knocking in 33 runs this season.
