EC and Wittenberg Match Ends in Stroke-off

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College field hockey team spent over two hours working toward a victory on Wednesday, but after pair of stroke-off rounds, the Quakers were not able to outlast Wittenberg University.

The score of the North Coast Athletic Conference contest was officially 1-0, although both squads were able to find the net several times in the stroke-offs.

"In the big picture, this was a big step forward for Earlham field hockey," Earlham Head Coach Jill Butcher said. "We proved to ourselves that we can play with the teams in the NCAC."

"But not finishing in the circle is something we are going to have to correct immediately."

After two scoreless periods and two overtime sessions, the Quakers got scores from Tara Burns (Deerfield, IL, Deerfield) and Rhea Bovee (Lindhurst, IL, Lake Forest) in the first stroke-off.

In the second, Christine Ferguson (Montclair, NJ, Montclair) scored for the Quakers, while the Tigers (1-2, 1-1) were able to put three shots in the net to come out on top.

Wittenberg led in shots 26-8, while holding a 16-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Earlham goalkeeper Emma Treece (Kettering, OH, Kettering Fairmont), who was honored prior to Wednesday's match for leading the nation in saves per game average last year, had 19 saves.

The Quakers (1-2, 0-1) entertain DePauw University on Tuesday. The NCAC match gets underway at 5 p.m.
