TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College men's tennis team picked up another victory on Sunday as the Quakers defeated Franklin College 9-0.
Earlham's second straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win has the pre-season favorites at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the league. Franklin falls to 0-2, 0-1. The Quakers defeated the Rose-Hulman Insitute of Technology 8-1 on Saturday.
"Overall, it was a good weekend," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "But if we want to compete against Denison University, we will have to play a little bit better."
The Quakers visit nationally-ranked Denison on Wednesday. Denison was at No. 30 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association pre-season poll back in November. The non-conference affair is scheduled for 4 p.m.
On Sunday in the doubles competition,
Hank Levin (Dallas, TX, Highland Park) and
Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia, International) won 8-3 over Ryan Hammer and Blake Wareham at No. 1.
Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys) and
Andrey Gavrilov (Yaroslavl, Russia, Universal) picked up an 8-1 victory over Jared Hunt and Brandon Roberts at No. 2, while
Scott Lawrence (Letchworth, England, Cheam) and
David Bluestein (Durham, NH, Buxton School) defeated Robby Woehrle and Evan Pierle 8-2 at No. 3.
In singles action, Levin defeated Wareham 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1. Bartashvich beat Hammer 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.
At No. 3, Gavrilov blanked Justin Smith 6-0, 6-0, while Maisey posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Luke Snyder at No. 4.
Lawrence took care of Hunt 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and
Shin Torizuka (Itabashi-ku Tokyo, Japan, International) won 6-2, 6-1 over Woehrle at No. 6.
