EC Splits Season-Opening Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DANVILLE, Ky. — The Earlham College baseball team battled some chilly weather on Saturday as the Quakers opened the season by splitting a doubleheader at Centre College.

The Quakers won the first contest 5-4 before falling 1-0 in the second game in 9 innings.

"We had an opportunity to win twice and didn't get it done," Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits said. "We have a lot of room to grow."

In the opener, Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay) knocked in the winning run for the Quakers with a double in the sixth inning that broke a 4-4 deadlock in the non-conference affair.

The Quakers fell behind when Centre (1-3) scored three times in the third inning.

The advantage did not last long as the Quakers responded with four runs in the top of the fourth frame.

Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) had a two-run single to make it 3-2. Earlham then picked up an unearned run to tie the game at 3-3 before Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster) completed the rally with a RBI single to put the Quakers on top 4-3.

Centre tied the game in the fifth to set the stage for Ward's winning hit.

Ward and Hayes had two hits each for the Quakers.

Caleb Brown (Newark, OH, Granville) started on the mound for the Quakers before being replaced by Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) with one in the fourth inning. Brown gave up three runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Lee (1-0), who departed after the fifth inning, got the win after giving up an unearned run on two hits.

T. J. Plummer (Aurora, IN, South Dearborn) worked the final two innings and gave up one hit with two walks to earn a save.

Matt Brankle (Kokomo, IN, Taylor) was the story on the mound for the Quakers in the second contest as he held Centre without a hit until the eighth inning when he left the game after giving up a single with one out. Brankle had six strikeouts.

Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) went the rest of the way for the Quakers and surrendered the lone run of the contest with one out in the ninth. Warning (0-1) gave up two hits in his one inning of work.

Ward, Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) and Chris Miller (Topeka, IN, Westview) each had singles for the Quakers, who had just three hits.

Earlham (1-1) returns to action next weekend in Tennessee with a three-game non-conference series at the University of the South. The teams play a twinbill on Saturday that starts at noon. On Sunday, the series wraps up with a single contest beginning at noon.
