ORLANDO, Fla. — Less than 12 hours after leaving the courts, the Earlham College men's tennis team was back in action on Wednesday morning as the Quakers defeated Principia College 8-1.
"This was a solid win against a good opponent," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said of his team's fifth straight victory. "It was really good after having a late match on Tuesday to come back and sweep the doubles matches so early in the morning."
In the doubles competition that started around 9:30 a.m.,
Hank Levin (Dallas, TX, Highland Park) and
Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia, International) defeated Jason Wissman and Nate Waters 8-4 at No. 1.
At No. 2,
Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys) and
Andrey Gavrilov (Yaroslavl, Russia, Universal) teamed up to beat Paul Sanderude and Brian Wold 8-1, while
Scott Lawrence (Letchworth, England, Cheam) and
Shin Torizuka (Itabashi-ku Tokyo, Japan, International) won 8-5 over Kevin Hagenlocher and Andrew Rohrer at No. 3.
The Quakers won five of the singles contest against the Panthers (3-1).
Levin beat Wissman 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Gavrilov posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Waters at No. 3.
Maisey defeated Hagenlocher 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, while Lawrence won by the same score over Wold at No. 5.
David Bluestein (Durham, NH, Buxton School) took care of Rohrer 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
Earlham (8-1) faces Goucher College in its final Florida match on Thursday. The contest begins at 3 p.m.
