EC Blanks Tigers 11-0

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. — There was plenty of pitching and offense on Sunday as the Earlham College baseball squad finished its three-game series at the University of the South by blanking the Tigers 11-0.

"It was the best overall game in my four years at Earlham," said second-year head coach Steve Sakosits, who also served as an assistant for two seasons before taking charge of the program.

Sakosits challenged Sunday's pitchers, who were part of Saturday's loss to the Tigers (3-5) in the series opener.

"We came back with them and they were ready to go to the mound," he said.

Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) started the game for the Quakers before getting relief help from Nate Hube (Lebanon, OH, Lebanon) and Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb).

Warning (1-1) worked six innings to get the victory. He allowed three hits, while striking out one. Hube didn't surrender a hit in two innings as he fanned five batters. Miller closed the contest by tossing a hitless ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.

The shutout was Earlham's first since the Quakers beat Spalding University 3-0 last season on March 22, behind a three-hit performance from Adam Painter. By winning two of the three contests, the Quakers claimed a series victory for the second time under Sakosits. Earlham swept three games from Defiance College last year.

At the plate on Sunday, the Quakers had 11 hits with Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) leading the way with three including a pair of doubles. Taylor Gibson (Cumberland, IN, Mt. Vernon) had two singles.

The Quakers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning with the help of two errors by the Tigers. Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay) capped the rally with a RBI single.

In the fourth, the Quakers added a pair of runs to build a 5-0 advantage. Gibson scored on a wild pitch and Ward knocked in a run on a groundout.

Schroeder made it 6-0 with a RBI double in the sixth.

Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) blasted his first career homer in the seventh to put the Quakers up 8-0.

The Quakers finished the afternoon with three runs in the ninth frame. Gibson had a two-run single and Chris Tillery (Carmel, IN, Carmel) drove in the final run with a double.

Earlham (3-2) is back on the road next weekend for a doubleheader against Rust College of Mississippi. The visit to Holly Springs is the first part of Earlham's week-long spring trip that concludes with three games in Florida.
