RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team had its two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Quakers celebrated Senior Day.
Franklin College picked up a 7-4 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over the Quakers on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium.
Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) was honored after the contest for his contributions to the Earlham baseball program.
A three-run second inning gave the Quakers an early lead. With runners at first and third,
Taylor Gibson (Cumberland, IN, Mt. Vernon) grounded into a double play that produced a run.
Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) and Schroeder followed with singles.
Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay) added the third straight single to score McCray. On the play, the Franklin right fielder threw the ball past the plate allowing Schroeder to race home and it was 3-0.
Franklin (22-8, 10-6) scored its first run in the third before adding four runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Quakers got a run-scoring single by
Nate Chandler (Austin, IN, Austin ) to cut the deficit to 5-4.
The Grizzlies scored the final two runs of the contest in the ninth.
Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) and
Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) led the Quakers with two hits each.
Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville) started on the mound for the Quakers. Broach (0-2) left with one out in the fifth, after giving up five runs on eight hits.
Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb) finished the game as he gave up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
Earlham (14-14, 4-10) finishes the HCAC series with Franklin on Sunday with a doubleheader at McBride Stadium scheduled for 1 p.m.
