RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team played its final home contest of the season on Tuesday as the Quakers fell to Bluffton University 11-2.
For
Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) it was also the last Earlham contest that he would play on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium.
Bluffton (15-19, 9-10) scored a pair of runs in the second inning of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair to grab an early lead.
However, in the bottom of the second the Quakers were able to tie the contest at 2-2.
Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay) was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. After Ward stole second,
Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) doubled to drive in the first run.
Blake Welch (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) and
Taylor Gibson (Cumberland, IN, Mt. Vernon) both walked to load the bases. Schroeder's sacrifice fly scored McCray to tie it at 2-2.
From that point, the Beavers scored nine unanswered runs on the way to the win.
Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) led the Quakers with two hits, while Ward, McCray,
Ross Yoho (Plainfield, IN, Plainfield) and
T. J. Ilhardt (Sunman, IN, East Central) had one hit each.
T. J. Plummer (Aurora, IN, South Dearborn) started on the mound for the Quakers and left with one out in the fourth. Plummer (2-2) gave up six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) finished the fourth and worked the fifth as he surrendered four runs on seven hits.
Garrett York (New Castle, IN, New Castle) tossed three scoreless innings as he gave up four hits.
Nate Hube (Lebanon, OH, Lebanon) gave up a run in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
The Quakers (14-17, 4-13) return to action on Friday with a HCAC 9-inning game at Transylvania on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
