EC Finishes Series at Transylvania

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Earlham College baseball team finished its weekend visit to Transylvania University on Saturday with a pair of one-run losses to the Pioneers.

Transylvania won the opener of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with a 4-3 win before taking the sceond contest 3-2.

In the first game, the Pioneers (19-16, 12-9) scored three times in the opening frame to grab an early lead against Earlham starting pitcher Matt Brankle (Kokomo, IN, Taylor).

The Quakers were able to respond with a run in the top of the second on a RBI groundout by Taylor Gibson (Cumberland, IN, Mt. Vernon).

Transylvania picked up its last run in the fourth before the Quakers rallied in the sixth to cut the deficit to one-run.

Chris Miller (Topeka, IN, Westview) and Gibson knocked in runs with singles to close the gap.

Brankle (3-4) went the distance for the Quakers giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Miller and Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster) led the Quakers with two hits each.

Game Two

Like the opening contest, Transylvania scored the first run of the second game. The Pioneers scored one time in the fourth and another in the fifth.

The Quakers picked up a run in the sixth to make it 2-1. Ross Yoho (Plainfield, IN, Plainfield) knocked in Gibson with a single. Gibson had walked and stole second base to set up the score.

The Pioneers added a run in the seventh before Earlham scored the final tally of the contest in the eighth as Gibson came home on a wild pitch.

Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) topped the Quakers with a pair of hits, including a double.

Caleb Brown (Newark, OH, Granville) started on the mound for the Quakers and he left the contest with one out in the sixth inning. Brown (2-5) surrendered two runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) finished the sixth and got one out in the seventh before giving way to Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb). Warning gave up a run on two hits, while Miller allowed a hit with a strikeout.

Earlham (14-20, 4-16) returns to action on Thursday at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a 9-inning HCAC game at 6 p.m.
