Quakers Open HCAC Series with Manchester

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team began a three-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series against Manchester College on Thursday night.

Manchester posted a 16-3 victory on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium.

The Quakers grabbed an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) led off the frame with a triple to right field. Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay) singled to knock Schroeder in and it was 1-0.

From that point, Manchester (12-11, 4-4) scored in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh to build a 13-1 advantage.

Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) blasted his third homer of the season and ninth of his career in the seventh for Earlham's second run. Hayes is tied for fifth on Earlham's career long ball list (since 1974) with Derreck Parkevich (2003-06).

Earlham's final tally came in the ninth when T. J. Ilhardt (Sunman, IN, East Central) picked up a RBI on a fielder's choice.

In addition to Schroeder, Ward and Hayes getting hits, Taylor Gibson (Cumberland, IN, Mt. Vernon) and had a double and Chris Tillery (Carmel, IN, Carmel) added a single.

Pitcher Matt Brankle (Kokomo, IN, Taylor) started for the Quakers and left the contest with one out in the fifth inning as he took the loss to fall to 2-3. Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern), Garrett York (New Castle, IN, New Castle) and Braden Richardson (Richmond, IN, Richmond) finished the game on the mound for the Quakers.

Earlham and Manchester complete the conference series on Friday at McBride with a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
