TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team started its final Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series of the season on Thursday with an 8-4 loss to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
The Quakers opened the contest with three runs in the top of the first inning.
Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) led off with a walk. He was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Chris Tillery (Carmel, IN, Carmel).
Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) then hit a run-scoring single to make it 1-0.
Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) followed with his fifth homer of the season and Earlham led 3-0. For Hayes, it was also the 11th long ball of his career and that puts him in a fourth-place tie on Earlham's all-time list with Jim West (1985-87).
The Engineers scored three times in the bottom of the first off Earlham starter
Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville) to tie the game at 3-3.
In the third inning,
Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay) put the Quakers back on top 4-3 with a RBI single.
After giving up a single and a walk to begin the bottom of the fifth inning, Broach gave way on the mound to
Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic). The first batter Warning faced hit a three-run homer and Rose-Hulman led 6-4.
Rose-Hulman scored twice in the seventh to take a four-run lead.
Williams led the Quakers with three hits, while Ward had a pair of hits.
In four innings of work, Broach (0-4) gave up five runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Warning also pitched four frames giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.
Earlham (14-21, 4-17) and Rose-Hulman (26-11, 17-5) finish the series on Friday with a doubleheader at 6 p.m.
