Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. — The Earlham College baseball team opened the season on Saturday with a doubleheader at the University of the South.
The Quakers fell 6-5 in the first contest and 2-1 in the second.
In the first game, Earlham scored twice to grab an early 2-0 advantage in top of first. Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) and Alex Arovits (Lebanon, OH, Lebanon, Eastern Kentucky) had run-scoring singles for the Quakers.
The Tigers then scored four times in the bottom of the first and then added two more runs in the second to go on top 6-2.
The score stayed the same until the top of the sixth when Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) blasted a solo home run, which was the 12th of his career. Hayes is now tied for third on Earlham's all-time list with Chas Meade (1974-77).
Later in the frame, Josh Parr (Centerville, IN, Centerville, DePauw University) knocked in a run with a single and the Quakers trailed 6-4.
Arovits finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Ward led the Quakers with three hits, while Williams and Parr added two hits each.
Matt Brankle (Kokomo, IN, Taylor) started on the mound for the Quakers. Brankle (0-1) went five innings and gave up six runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Garrett York (New Castle, IN, New Castle) tossed a scoreless sixth.
The Quakers began game two by scoring in the top of the first when Williams knocked in a run on a groundout.
The Tigers (4-0) tied the game in the bottom of the first and then scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the third.
Arovits led the Quakers with two hits including a double.
Earlham starteing pitcher Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) went five innings.
Warning (0-1) surrendered two runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb) finshed on the mound with a scoreless sixth inning.
The Quakers (0-2) finish the three-game series at the University of the South on Sunday with a 9-inning single contest at 2 p.m.
