Quakers Begin Weekend at Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Earlham College baseball team dropped a twinbill on Saturday as Spalding University defeated the Quakers 10-7 and 10-4 on the opening day of a three-games series.

In the opener, the Quakers got on the scoreboard first with a RBI single from Alex Arovits (Lebanon, OH, Lebanon, Eastern Kentucky).

The Golden Eagles tied the game in the second and added another tally in the third. Earlham went on top 4-2 in the top of the fourth.

Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) scored on a wild pitch and Josh Parr (Centerville, IN, Centerville, DePauw University) gave the Quakers the lead with a two-run single.

After Spalding made it 4-3 in its half of the fourth, Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Quakers a 6-3 advantage. Hayes moves into a tie with

Andrew Morrical (2008-11) for second on the all-time homer list (since 1974) with 13 in his career. Bobby Ebright (1996-97) is at the top with 17 long balls.

Spalding answered with a 5-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to take a 8-6 lead.

Hayes closed the gap to 8-7 with a RBI double in the sixth before Spalding scored the final two runs of the contest in the bottom of the sixth.

Hayes led the Quakers with three hits, while Arovits, Zach McFarland (Greenfield, IN, Mt. Vernon) and Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster) added two hits each.

Earlham starter Matt Brankle (Kokomo, IN, Taylor) worked four innnings before giving way to

Garrett York (New Castle, IN, New Castle) and Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb). York (0-1) took the loss.

The Quakers fell behind early in game two as they trailed 6-0 after three frames.

In the fourth, Thomas Rea (Indianapolis, IN, Warren Central) made it 6-2 when he knocked in a pair of runs with a single.

However, Spalding added three runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth.

Rea picked up another RBI in the sixth on a fielder's choice. Aaron Orosz (Crown Point, IN, Crown Point) finished the scoring for Earlham with a RBI double in the seventh.

Parr and McFarland led the Quakers with two hits apiece.

Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) started on the mound for the Quakers. Warning (0-2) left with one out in the third as he took the loss. Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) and Braden Richardson (Richmond, IN, Richmond) finished the game for the Quakers.

Earlham (1-4) and Spalding (5-0) finish the weekend set with a 9-inning single game on Sunday starting at noon.
