Friday's EC-Transylvania Contest Suspended by Darkness

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Earlham College baseball team battled Transylvania University into the darkness on Friday night with nothing decided after 11 innings.

The opener of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference three-game series was suspended after 11 innings with the score tied at 3-3.

The game will be resumed on Saturday, at 11:30 a.m., followed by a doubleheader that will wrap up the series, which was moved to Kentucky from Richmond on Thursday.

Transylvania (6-5, 0-0) scored a run in the top of the first and then the Pioneers added another in the third to take a 2-0 lead.

The Quakers cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the third. Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) had a two-out run-scoring single to make it 2-1.

The Pioneers scored in the fifth before the Quakers (4-10, 0-0) were able to respond in the sixth to tie the contest at 3-3.

Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) knocked in a run with a double to make it 3-2. Ross Yoho (Plainfield, IN, Plainfield) tied the affair with a single to score Hayes.

Thomas Rea (Indianapolis, IN, Warren Central) had three hits for the Quakers, while Yoho had two hits.

Earlham starter Matt Brankle (Kokomo, IN, Taylor) left the game with one out in the ninth. He gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) and T. J. Plummer (Aurora, IN, South Dearborn) went to the mound and got four outs each as the contest moved into extra innings.
