Box Score FRANKLIN, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team resumed play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Friday with a 4-3 loss at Franklin College.
The Quakers got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the third inning. Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) knocked in the first tally with a two-out single. Alex Arovits (Lebanon, OH, Lebanon, Eastern Kentucky) followed with a RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Grizzlies answered with three runs in the bottom of the third off Earlham starter Matt Brankle (Kokomo, IN, Taylor). Brankle went seven innings giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits with eight strikeouts.
The contest stayed at 3-2 until the eighth inning when Earlham was able to tie the affair with an unearned run.
In the bottom of the eighth, Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, Dekalb), Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) and T. J. Plummer (Aurora, IN, South Dearborn) each recorded an out, but Franklin was able to score the winning run. Miller (0-2) was tagged with the loss.
Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay, Marietta College) led the Quakers with two hits, including a double in the eighth that allowed him to score Earlham's run.
Earlham (5-13, 1-3) and the Grizzlies (7-8, 1-3) finish the three-game HCAC series in Franklin with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
