Box Score 2 DEFIANCE, Ohio — The Earlham College baseball team dropped both games of a twinbill at Defiance College on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets won the opener 8-7 in 11 innings, while taking the second game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair 9-5.
A bases loaded walk in the 11th inning gave Defiance the win in the first contest. Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) entered the game in the seventh and kept the Yellow Jackets scoreless until the decisive frame. Lee (1-5) gave up one run on two hits with four strikeouts, but took the loss.
The Quakers fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but responded with six runs in the third.
Thomas Rea (Indianapolis, IN, Warren Central), Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay), Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay, Marietta College), Zach McFarland (Greenfield, IN, Mt. Vernon) and Mark Dye (Munster, IN, Munster) knocked in runs in the rally.
Defiance added a run in the fourth and the Quakers answered with a run on a double steal by Ross Yoho (Plainfield, IN, Plainfield) and Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North), who scored on the play to make it 7-2.
In the fifth, the Yellow Jackets scored twice to close the gap to 7-4. Defiance tied the game at 7-7 with three runs in the sixth to set the stage for extra innings.
This was the sixth time the Quakers have played an extra inning contest and they have a 1-5 mark.
Matt Brankle (Kokomo, IN, Taylor) started on the mound for the Quakers. He worked six innings and gave up seven runs on 11 hits with nine strikeouts.
Dye led the Quakers with two hits.
The Quakers grabbed an early lead in the second game when Ward brought home a run in the first inning. The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the first and once in the second to build a 3-1 advantage
Ward got the Quakers closer at 3-2 with a RBI double in the fifth.
Josh Parr (Centerville, IN, Centerville, DePauw University) tied the contest at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, but Defiance bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-3.
Parr added a run-scoring triple in the eighth to make it 7-4. Defiance again answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to go on top 9-4.
Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) knocked in the final Earlham run with a single in the ninth.
Ethan Bailey (Greensburg, IN, Greensburg) led the Quakers with three hits, while Ward and Hayes finished with two hits each.
Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville), Garrett York (New Castle, IN, New Castle), Braden Richardson (Richmond, IN, Richmond) and Bryce Rainey (Greentown, IN, Eastern) all pitched for the Quakers. Broach (1-4) got the loss after leaving the contest with one out in the sixth.
The Quakers (7-24, 3-13) finish the HCAC series at Defiance (16-10, 9-7) with a single game beginning at noon.
