Box Score DEFIANCE, Ohio — The Earlham College baseball team finished a weekend series at Defiance College on Sunday with a 7-3 loss to the Yellow Jackets.
Defiance (17-10, 10-7) took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning of the the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest.
The Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the fourth before picking up another in the sixth. They got their final two runs in the eighth as they led 7-0.
The Quakers scored all three of their runs in the top of the ninth. Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay, Marietta College) knocked in the first two runs with a double. Ethan Bailey (Greensburg, IN, Greensburg) followed with a run-scoring single.
For Ward, it was his fourth hit of the day and also a record-breaker. The double was Ward's 56th hit of the spring, which set a new Earlham single-season mark. Jake Carr had 55 hits in 2009.
Bailey added three hits for the Quakers.
Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) started on the mound for the Quakers. Warning, who left with one out in the sixth, fell to 1-6 as he took the loss. Braden Richardson (Richmond, IN, Richmond) pitched the rest of the way.
Earlham (7-25, 3-14) are at home on Tuesday against Bluffton University. The HCAC contest gets underway at 6 p.m.
