Quakers Sweep Hanover

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RICHMOND, Ind. — There was plenty of offense, defense and pitching on Saturday as the Earlham College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Hanover College at McBride Stadium.

The Quakers won the opener 5-0 and took the second contest of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair 11-6.

Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) went the distance on the mound in the first game, while

Matt Brankle (Kokomo, IN, Taylor) left the second game with one out in the eighth inning.

"It was a great job by Zach," Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits said. "It set the tone for the day."

"We asked both of our starters to put up a zero in the first inning," Sakosits added. "It made it easier to play and coach both games."

It was the second doubleheader sweep of the season for the Quakers and first HCAC series win since 2011.

Earlham got on the scoreboard first in both contests and the Panthers (15-19, 8-13) never led during the afternoon.

Lee (2-5) tossed the first complete game and shutout of his career as he held the Panthers to four hits, while striking out five.

Ethan Bailey (Greensburg, IN, Greensburg) and Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) had run-scoring singles in the third inning to put the Quakers on top 2-0.

Thomas Rea (Indianapolis, IN, Warren Central) made it 4-0 in the fourth with a two-run homer to left field for his first long ball of the season.

In the fifth, Ryan McCray (Lexington, KY, Henry Clay) knocked in the final run of the opener with a single.

Williams had two hits for the Quakers.

Game Two

After Brankle held Hanover scoreless in the first frame, the Quakers grabbed a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the inning.

Williams knocked in the first run with a single and Zach McFarland (Greenfield, IN, Mt. Vernon) added a two-run single.

Hanover was able to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth, but the Quakers answered in the fifth with two runs on RBI singles by Bailey and Williams.

In the sixth, the Quakers took control of the contest with six runs to build an 11-3 lead. Alex Arovits (Lebanon, OH, Lebanon, Eastern Kentucky) had a two-run double, Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) followed with a two-run triple and Ross Yoho (Plainfield, IN, Plainfield) capped the rally with a two-run homer, which was his first of the year and seventh of his career.

The Panthers scored three times in the eighth for the final runs of the game.

Brankle (2-3) gave up four runs on five hits with nine strikeouts. Colton Miller (Auburn, IN, DeKalb) tossed the rest of the eighth and Braden Richardson (Richmond, IN, Richmond) pitched a scoreless ninth.

Williams had three hits to lead the Quakers, while Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay, Marietta College) and McFarland had two each. Ward added to his single-season hit record and now has 63 this spring.

Earlham (9-27, 5-16) finish the season next weekend against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The opener of the three-game HCAC series at McBride is Saturday at 5 p.m. The two teams finish with a twinbill on Sunday that starts at noon.
