Quakers Claim HCAC Regular Season Crown

ANDERSON, Ind. — The Earlham College men's tennis team cliched its third straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title on Tuesday as the Quakers beat Manchester University 6-0.

"It's great to win three regular season titles in a row, we started from the bottom and now we are here," said senior Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys), who holds Earlham's career victory mark with 129 wins.

Earlham, ranked 10th in the latest ITA Central Region poll, swept the singles competition from the Spartans (5-11, 3-6) in the contest that was played at Anderson University. The contest was played to decision and doubles matches were not played.

"Overall, we played a pretty dench (good) match today, which finished the regular season nicely," Maisey said.

Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia, International) defeated Kyle Lahman 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Phillip Locklear (Springboro, OH, Springboro) won 6-0, 6-0 over Bobby Swaby at No. 2.

At No. 3, Kyle Richter (Fremont, CA, Mission San Jose, UC-Santa Cruz) posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ryan Hawkins, while Maisey won by the same score over Phil Truitt at No. 4.

Andrey Gavrilov (Yaroslavl, Russia, Universal) beat Matt Buncich 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. Brent Kramer (Greenfield, IN, Eastern Hancock) took care of Alex Winger 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.

The Quakers (17-2, 9-0) had already earned the No. 1 seed in the HCAC Tournament at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis this weekend. The Quakers face the winner of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Hanover College on Saturday at 2 p.m. The HCAC championship match is Sunday at 10 a.m.
