Box Score 2 NO. MANCHESTER, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team finished its weekend series at Manchester University on Saturday.
Ranked 16th in the most recent D3baseball.com poll, the Spartans (19-3-1, 9-1) won both games of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with scores of 14-3 and 7-4 to maintain the top spot in the standings.
Manchester scored a pair of runs in the second inning to grab an early lead in the opener.
Earlham made it 3-1 in the fourth inning as Thomas Rea (Indianapolis, IN, Warren Central) knocked in a run with a single.
The Spartans answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 7-1.
In the fifth, the Quakers closed the gap to 7-3. Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, OH, Dixie) had a RBI single and Josh Parr (Centerville, IN, Centerville, DePauw University) added a sacrifice fly.
From that point, Manchester finished the scoring with seven more runs the rest of the way.
Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville) was the starting pitcher for the Quakers. Broach (1-3) got the loss after working four innings. Garrett York (New Castle, IN, New Castle) pitched three innings with T. J. Ilhardt (Sunman, IN, East Central) and Bryce Rainey (Greentown, IN, Eastern) tossing the eighth.Ethan Bailey (Greensburg, IN, Greensburg) and Sam Ward (Bay Village, OH, Bay, Marietta College) topped the Quakers with three hits apiece.
In the second game, Manchester had a 2-0 lead after two innings before the Quakers tied the contest at 2-2 in the third.
Bailey singled to begin the frame and Ward followed with another single. Bailey and Ward then executed a double steal and Bailey scored on an error by the Manchester catcher. Ward moved to third on the play and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Rea.
The Spartans responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to go on top 5-2. Manchester added two more runs in the fifth.
A two-run homer by Ward finished the scoring for the game in the eighth inning.
Bailey and Ward led the Quakers with three hits each.
Adam Warning (Ft. Wright, KY, Covington Catholic) started on the mound for the Quakers. Warning (1-3) took the loss after he left the game with two outs in the fifth. T. J. Plummer (Aurora, IN, South Dearborn) got the last out of the fifth and tossed the sixth. Zach Lee (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) worked the seventh and Braden Richardson (Richmond, IN, Richmond) pitched the eighth.
Earlham (6-18, 2-8) is at Bluffton University on Tuesday. The HCAC affair gets underway at 4:15 p.m.
