SEWANEE, Tenn. — The Earlham College baseball team opened the 2014 season on Saturday as the Quakers played at the University of the South.

The Tigers won both contests at Montgomery Field by scores of 9-2 and 3-2.

Earlham began the afternoon with a run in the top of the first during the opener as Alex Arovits had a RBI goundout after hits by Thomas Rea and Ted Williams.

The Tigers (4-0) scored twice in the bottom of the first and added four more runs in the second. The would later add three runs in the fourth.

The Quakers scored their other run in the third when Williams knocked home Rea with a single. Rea had also singled and stole second.

Matt Brankle (0-1) started on the mound for the Quakers and worked four innings as he picked up the loss. Bryce Rainey tossed three scoreless frames and gave up four hits. Howie Smith finished for the Quakers with a perfect eighth.

Game two came down to the final at bat of the contest as the Tigers won with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers scored single runs off Earlham starter Zach Lee in the second and third innings before the Quakers responded.

Williams tripled to begin the inning and Arovits followed with a single to make it 2-1.

The scored remained the same until the seventh thanks to some clutch mound work.

In the bottom of the sixth, T. J. Plummer entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs.

Plummer picked up a couple of strikeouts and then ended the frame with a line drive that Earlham second baseman Ira Hughes grabbed.

The Quakers were able to tie the contest in the top of the seventh on a RBI double by Rea. Nate Lynch led off with a bunt single. Ethan Bailey moved Lynch to second with a sacrifice bunt to set up Rea.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers were able to score the winning run off Plummer (0-1) on an error. Lee tossed five innings as he gave up seven hits and two runs with only one being earned. He finished with six strikeouts.

Earlham (0-2) finishes its three-game series against the Tigers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
