Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A late offensive outburst helped the Earlham College baseball team pick up its third win in a row on Saturday.
The Quakers scored six runs over the last two innings to beat Penn State University-Behrend 9-0 in a contest at Spalding University.
Leading 3-0 going into the top of the eighth, the Quakers scored five times to put the game away. Matt Barger put down a perfect bunt that allowed Ted Williams to score the first run of the frame.
Devin Spurgon was hit by a pitch to drive in the next run. The third run came on a wild pitch and the final two came home on an infield hit by Ethan Bailey. He picked up on RBI with the other run crossing the plate due to an error.
In the ninth, Eric Elkus blasted his first career home run to left field to cap the scoring for the contest.
The Quakers began the contest with single runs in the first three innings.
Alex Arovits knocked in one in the first. In the second, Bailey had a run-scoring single to make it 2-0. Arovits gave the Quakers a 3-0 advantage in the third with a RBI double after Williams started the inning with a triple.
Zach Lee (1-0) picked up the win after entering the game with two outs in the first inning for Earlham starter Matt Brankle, who left the mound with an injury.
Lee worked the next four innings and gave up five hits with a strikeout. Adam Warning tossed the next two frames giving up a hit.
John Cornett worked the eighth and Garrett York was perfect in the ninth to close out the game.
Earlham (3-2) returns to action at home next Saturday in the opener of Randal R. Sadler Stadium. The Quakers entertain Kalamazoo College at 2 p.m.
