EC Wins HCAC Opener

WARSAW, Ind. â€" The Earlham College men's tennis team opened play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Friday with a 9-0 victory over Manchester University.

The Quakers started the contest with a sweep of the doubles competition at the Warsaw Tennis and Fitness Club as they won their third match in a row.

Andrey Gavrilov and Scott Lawrence won 8-4 over Stratton Smith and Miro Arguijo III at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2, Hank Levin and Oliver Smith defeated Matt Buncich and Trent Baker 8-1.

Phillip Locklear and Nathan Reinsma took care of Alex Winger and Trevor Jones 8-3 at No. 3.

In singles action against the Spartans (0-6, 0-1), Locklear blanked Smith 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. Levin posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Arguijo III at No. 2.

Lawrence beat Buncich 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, while Gavrilov won 8-2 over Winger at No. 4.

Smith, in the No. 5 spot for the Quakers, won 6-1, 6-3 over Baker. At No. 6, Reinsma defeated Jones 8-4.

Earlham (3-2, 1-0) visits the state of Texas next week as the Quakers face Austin College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
