EC Splits with Yellow Jackets

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team split a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill with Defiance College on Saturday at Randal R. Sadler Stadium.

The Quakers won the first contest 6-1 before Defiance took the second game 7-5 in 11 innings.

In the opener, Earlham starter Zach Lee took control on the mound as the Quakers built a lead.

A pair of run-scoring singles by Josh Parr and Matt Barger gave the Quakers a 2-0 advantage in the second inning. Earlham went up 3-0 with an unearned run in the third.

Alex Arovits knocked in a run with an infield single in the fifth to make it 4-0. With Arovits on first base, Ryan Hayes followed with a two-run homer to cap the scoring for the Quakers.

Lee (3-0) left the game with one out in the seventh. In earning the victory, Lee gave up four hits, while striking out four.

Colton Miller finished the seventh, but he allowed a run in the eigth. Dalton Carter pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the contest.

Arovits and Hayes led the Quakers with two hits each.

The Yellow Jackets (7-7, 1-2) jumped out to an early lead in the second game with four runs off Earlham starter John Cornett in the second inning.

From that point, Howie Smith took over on the mound for the Quakers and held Defiance scoreless until he left with one out in the seventh.

Meanwhile, the Quakers were fighting back. Hayes hit another homer to make it 4-1. It was his fourth of the season and 23rd of his career, which is Earlham's all-time record.

In the fifth, Ted Williams had a RBI single and Hayes added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3.

It stayed that way until the ninth. Earlham pitcher Garrett York kept the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard allowing the Quakers to send the game into extra innings.

A RBI single in the bottom of the ninth by Ryan McCray made it 4-4.

Defiance scored in the top of the tenth, but the Quakers were able to answer in the bottom of the frame to tie it at 5-5 when Williams singled home a run.

The Yellow Jackets got the game-winning runs in the top of the 11th off T. J. Plummer (0-2).
Williams led the Quakers with four hits and Hayes added three. Thomas Rea, Arovits and McCray had two hits.

Earlham (10-4, 2-1) entertains Adrian College on Wednesday. The non-conference affair gets underway in Randal R. Sadler Stadium at 4 p.m.
