Quakers Split Twinbill with Grizzlies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RICHMOND, Ind. — Pitching was the name of the game on Sunday as the Earlham College baseball team spilt a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Franklin College.

Behind a complete game from Zach Lee, the Quakers won the opener 2-1 in Randal R. Sadler Stadium. The Grizzlies won the second contest 2-0.

The Quakers (11-7) are now in sixth place in the HCAC with a 3-3 record. Franklin is 13-7 and 4-2.

In his nine innings of work in the first game, Lee (4-0) gave up one run on four hits with eight strikeouts.

Offensively, the Quakers were able to produce just enough to earn the victory.

With one out in the second inning, Ryan McCray singled. After another out, McCray stole second and came home to score on a single by Eric Elkus.

McCray gave the Quakers a 2-0 advantage with a run-scoring single in the sixth. Franklin scored in the seventh before Lee was able to blank the Grizzlies over the next two frames.

In the second game, Earlham starter Matt Brankle (0-2) was matching Lee's performance through six innings. Franklin managed to produce a run in the seventh after Brankle left the game with one out in the inning. Brankle gave up an unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts.

Garrett York gave up Franklin's other run in the eighth. From that point, Dalton Carter, Adam Warning and T. J. Plummer finished on the mound for the Quakers.

Thomas Rea and Nate Lynch led the Quakers with two hits each in the second game. The Quakers face the College of Mount St. Joseph in a conference affair on Tuesday in Sadler Stadium at 4 p.m.
