EC Wins Opener in Sadler Stadium

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. — Randal R. Sadler Stadium was opened in style on Saturday as the Earlham College baseball team picked up a 7-0 victory over Kalamazoo College.

"We wouldn't be here if is wasn't for Randy," Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits said. "Randy is huge for this program and him being here to throw out the first pitch means a lot. It's really exciting for us to have this field."

The excitement started early as the Quakers got off to a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning.

Ted Williams had the first hit in Sadler Stadium for the Quakers (4-2) as he singled to center. After Alex Arovits reached on an error by the Hornets (0-1), Ryan Hayes singled to drive in a pair of runs.

That was all of the scoring until the bottom of the fifth frame.

A bunt single by Nate Lynch started the rally. He promptly swiped second and moved to third in a passed ball. Ethan Bailey followed with a walk and then he stole second.

Thomas Rea made it 3-0 with a RBI ground out. Williams walked. With Bailey at third and Williams on first the duo pulled off a double steal. Williams made it to second, while drawing a throw from the Kalamazoo catcher that allowed Bailey to score.

Hayes and Eric Elkus added run-scoring singles and the Quakers led by six runs.

Earlham's final run of the contest came in the seventh when Rea scored on an error by the Kalamazoo catcher, while he was throwing in the ball back to the pitcher.

Hayes and Josh Parr led Earlham with two hits each as the Quakers won their fourth game in a row.

Nate Hube started on the mound for the Quakers as he worked seven innings. Hube (2-0) blanked the Hornets as he gave up five hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.

Colton Miller tossed a scoreless eighth inning despite surrendering two hits, while Kyle Agius closed out the contest in the ninth allowing a walk.

The two teams finish their three-game weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday. The first game gets underway at noon.
