Box Score 2 RICHMOND, Ind. — Sweep.
The opening weekend in Randal R. Sadler Stadium was a success as the Earlham College baseball team took a doubleheader from Kalamazoo College on Sunday.
The Quakers won the first game 20-6 and posted a 9-2 victory in the second contest with the Hornets (0-3). Earlham is now 6-2 and on a six-game winning streak, which includes winning the three-game set from Kalamazoo.
"It was a fun weekend with a lot of hits strung together," Earlham designated hitter Ryans Hayes said. "It's a good start as we work our way toward the conference season."
"A lot of guys got into the first game and good things happened for our younger guys," Hayes added. "That is really good to see as we build this program."
Earlham's offense scored in seven out of eight innings during the first game as the Quakers collected 19 hits.
The Quakers led 3-1 when they exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third. They added two more in the fourth and another in the sixth before scoring five times in the seventh. The Quakers finished the opener with three runs in the eighth.
Ethan Bailey, Ryan McCray and Ira Hughes led the Quakers with three hits each. One of McCray's hits was the first home run in Sadler Stadium by an Earlham player.
Hayes, Alex Arovits and Eric Elkus finished with two hits apiece. Matt Barger hit his first homer of the season and drove in four runs as well.
Zach Lee started on the mound for the Quakers to earn the victory. Lee (2-0) went five innings allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Adam Warning, Garrett York and Dalton Carter finished tossing the final four innings for the Quakers.
In game two, the Hornets took their only lead of the weekend with a pair of runs in the first inning.
It didn't last long as the Quakers responded with four runs in the second inning.
Hayes led off the frame with a solo homer to left. Elkus followed with a triple and then Josh Parr doubled to right to tie the game at 2-2.
Bailey finished the rally with a two-run double to make it 4-2.
In the third, Hayes blasted another homer and it was 5-2. The 21st long ball of his career cleared the fence in center as he extended his all-time Earlham record for homers.
"The home runs felt pretty good," Hayes said. "I'm just glad that I could help the team."
Ted Williams scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to put the Quakers in from 6-2.
Cody Kaumlauf had a run-scoring single in the seventh before he later scored on a wild pitch. Elkus ended the scoring for the day with a RBI double in the eighth.
Parr led the Quakers with three hits, while Bailey, Arovits, Hayes and Elkus all had two hits.
John Cornett went seven innings for the Quakers to pick up the win. Cornett gave up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. After allowing a single in the second inning, Cornett retired 17 batters in a row.
T. J. Plummer worked the final two frames giving up a hit with two strikeouts.
The Quakers are back on the field at home on Tuesday against Robert Morris University-Springfield for a twinbill beginning at 1 p.m.
