The Earlham College baseball team stayed on a roll on Wednesday night as the Quakers posted a 1-0 victory over the College of Mount St. Joseph at Marge Schott Field on the campus of the University of Cincinnati.
With the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win, the Quakers (15-13, 7-8) remain in a tie for sixth place in the standings with Bluffton University (14-13, 7-8).
Three Earlham pitchers combined on Wednesday to blank the Lions (11-15-1, 6-9) without surrendering a walk.
While making just his second collegiate start, Bryce Rainey (1-0) worked seven innings and gave up six hits with four strikeouts to pick up the win. John Cornett was perfect in the eighth with a pair of strikeouts.
Matt Brankle earned his first save of the season by not allowing a base runner in the ninth with two strikeouts.
Offensively, Earlham managed to get 11 hits, but thanks to their pitching, the Quakers only needed a RBI single by Ethan Bailey in the fifth inning.
Ryan Hayes led the Quakers with three hits. The other eight players in the lineup each had one hit. Hayes had a double and Nate Lynch added a triple.
Earlham returns to action on Friday in the first game of a HCAC series at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The contest begins at 6 p.m.
