Box Score BLUFFTON, Ohio — The Earlham College baseball team came up short on Tuesday with a 6-4 loss at Bluffton University
After the Quakers had tied the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest in the top of the eighth inning, the Beavers responded with a pair of runs to decide the game in the bottom of the frame.
Bluffton scored the first run of the game in the third inning before the Quakers tied it at 1-1 in the fourth. Ryan McCray singled to begin the inning. Devin Spurgon followed with a double that moved McCray to third and an error by Bluffton allowed McCray to score.
The Beavers added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to go on top 4-1.
Earlham rallied in the eighth. Ryan Hayes tripled to drive in two runs and McCray singled to tie the game at 4-4 to set the stage for Bluffton's decisive eighth inning.
McCray and Nate Lynch led the Quakers with two hits each.
John Cornett started on the mound for the Quakers and worked four innings giving up two runs on five hits. Adam Warning was next leaving with one out in the seventh after giving up two runs on four hits.
Dalton Carter (0-1) got the last two outs of the seventh, but gave up two unearned runs in the eighth after getting one out. Kyle Agius recorded the final two outs.
The Quakers (11-12, 3-8) entertain Wittenberg University on Wednesday. The non-conference affair in Randal R. Sadler Stadium starts at 4 p.m.
