INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. â€" The Earlham College men's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday with a 5-1 win over Franklin College.
The top-seeded Quakers (15-6) meet No. 3 Transylvania University (8-6) on Sunday at the West Indy Racquet Club at 2 p.m. The winner receives the HCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament that begins next week.
Transylvania defeated the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 5-2 on Saturday to move to the finals.
Earlham, ranked 10th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Central Region Poll, led 2-1 after the doubles competition.
Anton Bartashevich and Jack Ventura-Cruess beat Ryan Hammer and Ethan Caldwell 8-5 at No. 1, while Phillip Locklear and Hank Levin took care of Jared Hunt and Luke Snyder 8-2 at No. 2.
In singles play, the Quakers ended the contest with three wins as they won their 40th match in a row against conference opponents.
Locklear defeated Caldwell 6-4, 6-1 in the second position. Levin blanked Snyder 6-0, 6-0 at the third spot.
At No. 4, Ventura-Cruess posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Evan Pierle.
