Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team had 40 runners cross the plate on Wednesday as the Quakers swept a doubleheader from Robert Morris University-Springfield.
The Quakers won the opener in Randal R, Sadler Stadium 21-4 before taking the second affair 19-3. The 40 runs are the most in a twinbill by the Quakers during the NCAA era, dating back to the 1980s.
With the two wins, Earlham is also off to its best start in the NCAA era through six games with a 5-1 record. Earlham's 1994 squad was 4-1 before falling in the sixth game.
In the opener, Earlham led 5-0 after two innings when they sent 22 batters to the plate in the third. The Quakers scored 16 runs on seven hits and four errors by the Eagles (0-3).
Eric Elkus and Cody Krumlauf led the Quakers with two hits each, while the both knocked in three runs. Nate Lynch, Brennan Laird and Brandon Smalling all scored three runs apiece.
Earlham starter Bryce Rainey (1-0) worked four innings to pick up the win. He gave up three runs on five hits. Dalton Carter tossed the final inning of the contest and allowed a run on a hit.
Game two wasn't much different. The Quakers scored three times in the first and twice in the second before adding five more in the third. They finished with eight runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
Drew Lively (2-0) went five innings for the Quakers to earn the victory. He gave up three runs on six hits. Dorian Holmes and Matt Mathies each threw a scoreless frame.
Lynch and Mike Messina led the Quakers with three hits each, while Smalling hit a grand slam homer in the fourth inning. Josh Parr had a pair of triples with three RBI.
Earlham gets a visit from Oberlin College this weekend for a three-game series. The two teams meet for a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game beginning at 1 p.m. On Sunday, a single contest begins at noon.
