Box Score 2 RICHMOND, Ind. — Brandon Smalling was a one-man show for the Earlham College baseball team on Saturday as the Quakers swept a doubleheader from Oberlin College.
On the day, Smalling had eight hits and a walk in nine plate appearances to lead the Quakers.
"I've never seen anybody have a day like that," Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits said. "Every single time he was up, he came through."
Smalling had four singles, three doubles and a three-run homer with a walk. The third baseman added six runs scored, while knocking in five. He was also flawless in the field with five assists.
Several others followed Smalling's performance as the Quakers had to comeback to win the opener 14-8 in Randal R. Sadler Stadium, while jumping out to an early lead to take the second contest 24-4.
Over the last four games, the Quakers have outscored their opponents 78-19. The Quakers are off to their best start in the NCAA era after eight games at 7-1.
"It's kind of scary to think what our offense can do," Sakosits said.
Earlham scored 38 runs on 37 hits against the Yeomen (1-3) on Saturday.
In the first affair, the Quakers trailed 4-1 and 8-4 before they rallied to put the game away.
Down by four runs in the fifth inning, the Quakers picked up three runs to close the gap to 8-7.
They scored on an error and a wild pitch before Matt Barger hit a sacrifice fly.
A four-run sixth inning proved to be the difference for Earlham. Devin Spurgon tied the game with a RBI double.
Josh Parr made it 10-8 with a two-run double. Eric Elkus doubled home Parr for the final run.
Smalling ended the scoring with his three-run blast to center in the seventh for the final margin.
Garrett York (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Quakers as he blanked the Yeomen over the last four frames on one hit with four strikeouts.
"That was a big outing for him," Sakosits said. "He didn't walk anyone and was aggressive in the strike zone."
Nate Hube started for the Quakers and left the game with one out in the fifth. John Cornett got the other two outs in the fifth before York took over.
Smalling topped the squad with four hits, while Thomas Rea, Spurgon and Elkus had two hits each.
Earlham's offense just kept rolling in the second game as the Quakers scored five times in the first inning. They added three more in the fourth and nine in the fifth to lead 17-1.
Smalling again led the Quakers with four hits, but Nate Lynch and Ethan Bailey joined into the mix with three hits apiece.
Spurgon, Brennan Laird and Cody Krumlauf each finished with two hits. Spurgon knocked in four runs and Bailey had three RBI.
A highlight of the six-run Earlham seventh inning was a grand slam homer by Mike Messina. It was the first collegiate long ball for the catcher, who had five RBI for the contest.
Howie Smith (1-0), who pitched seven innings to earn the win, gave up two runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. Dalton Carter tossed the final two innings.
The two squads finish the three-game series on Sunday with a single contest at noon.
