Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — A run-scoring single by Nate Lynch in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the difference for the Earlham College baseball team on Sunday as the Quakers completed three-game series sweep of Oberlin College at Randal R. Sadler Stadium.
With the 6-5 win, the Quakers have won six straight, including the first two of the weekend series on Saturday over the Yeomen (1-4).
Earlham is now 8-1, which is the top start to a season for the Quakers in the NCAA era through nine contests.
After Oberlin tied the game at 5-5 with three runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Quakers answered.
Ethan Bailey hustled out a double with two outs to set the stage for Lynch's game-winner, which was his team-high third hit of the day.
Matt Brankle (1-0) finished off the Yeomen by tossing a perfect ninth inning to record the victory.
Brankle entered the contest with two outs in the fifth and went the rest of the way allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits with five strikeouts.
Earlham starter Kyle Agius surrendered a pair of runs on a couple of hits.
Another Early Advantage
Oberlin scored once in the first before the Quakers tied it in their half of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Smalling. It was Smalling's sixth RBI of the series. He later had a single to finish with nine hits for the weekend.
In the second, Earlham added four runs to take a 5-1 lead. Josh Parr scored on a wild pitch and
Thomas Rea followed with a two-run single later in the inning. Brennan Laird knocked in the final run on a ground out.
Oberlin picked up a run in the fifth against Agius to make it 5-2 before the Yeomen scored in the eighth.
The Quakers entertain Wilmington College in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
