EC Wins Third Straight

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team won its third straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game on Tuesday with a 14-8 victory over Mount St. Joseph University.

With the win, the Quakers are 15-4 overall as they moved into a second-place tie in the conference with a 5-3 record. Anderson University, Manchester University and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology also have 5-3 records in the league. Bluffton University leads the HCAC at 7-1.

The victory was the 76th for Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits, who is now tied for second place on the all-time wins list with Rick Carter. Tom Parkevich is at the top with 80 wins.

Tuesday also marked the first time this spring the Quakers played away from Randal R. Sadler Stadium with the contest against the Lions (7-10, 2-6) at Xavier University.

Bryce Rainey (4-0) went six innings on the mound for the Quakers to pick up the victory. He gave up a run on three hits with four strikeouts. Drew Lively and Garrett York finished up for the Quakers. York gave up a run on three hits in the final two frames.

The Quakers got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Thomas Rea knocked in the first run on a ground out and Brennan Laird scored on an error.

In the fifth, Earlham made it 5-0. Josh Parr and Devin Spurgon drove in runs as they both hit into a fielder's choice. Rea also scored on an error.

After the Lions picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Quakers scored five times in the seventh to build a 10-1 advantage.

Brandon Smalling had a RBI double and Joe Pipher added a two-run single. Spurgon scored on another error by the Lions before Nate Lynch finished the rally with a run-scoring double.

Mount St. Joseph closed the gap to 10-7 with six runs in the seventh, but a sacrifice fly by Parr in the eighth made it 11-7.

Rea ended the day for the Quakers with a three-run homer in the ninth to put the Quakers up 14-7.

Lynch, Rea, Laird and Smalling led the Quakers with two hits each.

Earlham visits Manchester this weekend for a three-game series starting on Friday at 4:15 p.m.

The two squads play a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at noon.
