Quakers Take Care of Grizzlies

FRANKLIN, Ind. — Three big innings made the difference on Friday as the Earlham College baseball team opened a weekend series at Franklin College with a 13-1 win over the Grizzlies.

The victory puts the Quakers at 19-5 overall and alone in first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference at 9-4.

Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits is also now tied on the all-time list for victories with 80 as he matches Tom Parkevich.

The Quakers scored three times in the third before putting the game away in the sixth with six runs. They added four more in the ninth after Franklin scored its lone run of the contest in the seventh.

In the third, Brennan Laird got the Quakers on top with a RBI single. Josh Parr made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. Laird and Brandon Smalling hooked up with a double steal for the final run as Smalling swiped second, while Laird stole home.

Cody Krumlauf started the sixth with a two-run double to make it 5-0. Thomas Rea doubled home another run and Nate Lynch knocked in Rea to put the Quakers on top 7-0. Earlham's final two runs of the frame came on an error.

Devin Spurgon had a RBI double for the first run in the ninth. Krumlauf added a two-run single before Smalling picked up the last tally of the day with a single.

Lynch and Eric Elkus led the Quakers with three hits apiece, while Rea, Laird, Spurgon and Krumlauf had two hits each.

Howie Smith (3-0) went seven innings on the mound for the Quakers to earn the victory. He gave up an unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts.

Drew Lively worked the final two frames not allowing a run and giving up two hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The two squads finish their series on Saturday with a twinbill that starts at noon.
