Rea, Rainey Lead Quakers to Victory over Lions

Box Score

AMELIA, Ohio — A ninth-inning single by Thomas Rea gave the Earlham College baseball team a 3-2 win on Tuesday over Mount St. Joseph University at Midland Field.

Pitcher Matt Brankle slammed the door on the Lions (10-15, 5-10) in the bottom of the ninth to seal the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory for the Quakers.

With the win, the Quakers are now 21-6 overall and 11-5 in the conference and in a first-place tie with Anderson University. The 21 wins ties last year's team and the 1969 squad for the third most victories in a season in school history.

Earlham starter Bryce Rainey (5-0) picked of the win with eight innings of work. Rainey gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts.

Brankle gave up a pair of singles to start the ninth, but he struck out the next two batters and then retired the final hitter on a fielder's choice for his sixth save of the season. His sixth save ties him with T.J. Plummer who set the season record in 2014.

The game was scoreless until the Lions picked up a run in the fourth to take a 1-0 advantage.

In the fifth, Brennan Laird had a two-run single to put the Quakers on top 2-1.

The Lions scored their final run the sixth to tie the contest at 2-2 to set the stage for Rea's game-winner.

Rea and Cody Krumlauf led the Quakers with two hits each.

Earlham entertains Spalding University on Wednesday. The non-conference affair in Randal R. Sadler Stadium is at 4 p.m.
