Field Hockey Shuts out Transylvania to Win Season Opener

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. - Junior Megan Hut netted a hat trick and senior goalkeeper Kate Korobkina did not surrender a goal as the Earlham College field hockey team shutout Transylvania University 4-0 to win the season opener on Saturday.

After a scoreless first half, Hut broke the deadlock in the 45th minute notching her first goal of the season. Less than four minutes later, freshman Thu Pham found the net as she was set up by junior Kristina Brunner. Hut would add goal number two in the 50th minute and cap off the hat trick in the 57th minute.

Avenging a season opening loss to the Pioneers in 2014, Earlham outshot Transylvania 21-6 in the contest including a 14-4 advantage in the second half. The Quakers also held a slight edge in penalty corners, 8-7.

Senior goalkeeper Kate Korobkina earned the shutout in her first collegiate game in net. She made two saves in the contest.

The victory marked Heather Moore's first win at home as Earlham's head coach. In addition, the Quakers shutout an opponent for the first time since blanking Wilson College 1-0 on Sept. 8, 2013.

Earlham improves to 1-0 on the season while Transylvania drops to 0-1. The Quakers return to action for the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opener on Sept. 9 for a 7 p.m. game at Ohio Wesleyan
