Baseball Defeats Sewanee 4-3, Sweeps Series

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team came from behind for the second consecutive game as the Quakers rallied for a 4-2 win over Sewanee at Sadler Stadium on Sunday.

The Tigers (0-12) got on the board in the first inning using a walk and two singles including an RBI-single from Jackson Cooper. Earlham would not trail for long, however, as the Quakers drew two walks and used two Sewanee errors to even the score 1-1.

After a scoreless second inning, Earlham took the lead when senior Thomas Rea drew a walk and stole two bases. Senior Brandon Smalling delivered an RBI-groundout to second base.

Neither team would score against until the eighth inning when the Tigers put together three hits to tie the game 2-2. Similar to the first inning, the Quakers had the answer. Junior Cody Krumlauf reached base with a single, and junior Matt Barger delivered an RBI-double, giving Earlham a 3-2 lead.

After a groundout, senior Ethan Bailey hit a pinch hit, RBI-single scoring Barger to give the Quakers a two-run cushion.

That run proved critical as Sewanee plated its third run in the top of the ninth inning. With two runners on base, freshman Walter Talcott struck out Ryan Poole to secure his first career victory.

Junior John Cornett received a no-decision, allowing seven hits in six innings of work. Talcott earned the win allowing one earned run while striking out four in three innings.

Sewanee tallied 14 hits in the game compared to seven for Earlham. The Quakers drew seven walks while the Tigers committed four errors.

With the win, Earlham swept Sewanee in the three-game series. The Quakers return to action on March 5 and 6 with a series at Sadler Stadium against Kalamazoo.
