RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team did something not seen in recent memory on Wednesday. The Quakers came back from a 10-run deficit to defeat Wabash College 13-12 in non-conference action at Sadler Stadium.

Trailing 12-7 entering the bottom of the ninth, six of the first seven Quakers reached base. Using four hits and two walks along with two wild pitches, three runs had crossed the plate. With the deficit at 12-10, Wabash pitcher Alex Dickey notched a strikeout, getting the Little Giants one out away from a victory.

Senior Devin Spurgon fell behind 1-2 in the next at bat, but worked the count to full and eventually drew a walk to load the bases. Up came sophomore Drew Dietz for the second time in the inning, after starting the rally with leadoff single. The Hamilton, Ohio, native delivered again, hitting a two-RBI, walk-off single through the left side completing the comeback win.

The Quakers began the comeback well before the ninth inning, however. Wabash (16-12) put up two runs in the first, one in the third, and a seven-spot in the fifth, chasing Earlham starter, junior John Cornett.

Trailing 10-0, the Quakers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a single from junior Eric Elkus and a Wabash error. After surrendering those two runs in the top of the sixth, Earlham got within seven runs (12-5) by using a solo home run from Spurgon, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly from junior Brennan Laird.

Sophomore Matt Mathies shutdown the Wabash offense in the seventh and eighth, and Earlham capitalized with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

After a scoreless top of the ninth courtesy of senior Bryce Rainey, the Quakers put up six runs in the bottom of the ninth to get the win.

Earlham finished with 13 hits compared to 15 for Wabash. Elkus finished 3-5 with three RBIs while Dietz added a 3-6 performance with two RBIs and two runs scored. Spurgon, Laird, and freshman Addison Robertson each added two hits.

Sean Roginski led the Little Giants individually, going 3-5 with five RBIs.

Earlham improves to 22-8 with the win. The Quakers will host Anderson University in a three-game series this weekend to close out the home regular season schedule.
